Creative Link Building Techniques For A Sustainable Link Building Strategy

Search Engine Optimisation is not the same game it was two years ago and evolves at rapid pace. Without the knowledge, skills and drive to keep informed and up-to-date, SEO’s can quickly become behind with the times.

Arguably one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in SEO is the way we build links. In fact, the very idea of “building links” is becoming out of date as Google crashes down on unnatural link profiles. Think about it; if you’ve built a link, it is unlikely to be a “natural” backlink. However, there are ways we can actively improve link profiles with quality backlinks and still fall within Google guidelines by using creative link building techniques.
In this post I will discuss creative ways to build high quality, natural backlinks as part of a sustainable link building strategy.

Monitor Brand Mentions

With Google Trends and other similar tools, you can easily monitor each time you brand name is mentioned across the web. You can also set up email or browser notifications to find out whenever your chosen keyword (in this instance, your brand) is mentioned and when you find a new mention, go and check it out.
If the site is discussing your brand and has a good PageRank, check whether they link to you somewhere on the page. More often than not you will find that they already are which is great and you can try and build a strong relationship with them in the future for further links. You can also review the anchor text and see if it could be improved. If they’re not linking to you, contact the site owners and politely request that they make your brand name an anchor to your site or suggest they link to a piece of your content that further builds on their article.

Internal Broken Link Building

Fixing broken links on your site is an essential part of site maintenance but can also be a great technique for regaining lost backlinks.
Start by analysing your backlink profile using a link analysis tool such as Majestic SEO, Screaming Frog or Open Site Explorer. Using tools like these and with a bit of manual exporting, filtering and analysis you can find links to broken pages on your site. You’re looking for pages with a 404 or similar error. Be sure to check any broken links manually though: no tool is 100% accurate 100% of the time.
When you have a definitive list of backlinks which point to old broken pages, you have a number of options to resolve. You may just need to fix the broken page if it isn’t meant to be broken, or 301 the broken page to a relevant live page, however ensure that the link will still be relevant if doing so. Alternatively if the links come from other website, you can contact the sites linking back to you and request that they change their link to the relevant live page. Whichever way you resolve the issue, you will end up with an old link revitalised and current once more.
This technique can take time and doesn’t usually provide a wealth of new link juice, but is a great way of keeping your link profile current and clean, as well as identifying issues with your pages that you may not have otherwise been aware of.

External Broken Link Building

This variation on “broken link building” involves looking for broken links to your competitors’ sites or other sites in your industry. In the same way as internal broken link building, you can look for these opportunities by running your chosen relevant sites through link analysis tools and looking for broken links. You can also use the Broken Link Checker plugin for Chrome and carry out some basic checks on-page.
Once you have identified a potential opportunity, contact the site owner to let them know they have a broken link. Sites generally want to know if they have broken links as it is in their interest to resolve them, which means you can get their attention and are offering them something beneficial to them. This is also a good chance to suggest a page on your website that might be relevant to their website and worth a link.
You won’t always get a link through this technique, sometimes the site owners will just fix the link and be done with you, but if you can get a link out of it you will likely also build a relationship with the site owner, meaning more potential opportunities in the future.

Get Interviewed

Get Interviewed to Build LinksOne great way to get a natural backlink is to find someone to interview you or provide a quote for a blog post or news article on a relevant industry site. This might sound difficult to achieve, but in reality you are an expert in what you do (or should be) and your opinion is valuable to the right person.
To begin this process, look for high quality sites which discuss topics relevant to your business. See what sort of content they have written before, looking at style, quality and target audience.
When you identify a potential interview opportunity, send the site a polite email or message and pitch the idea. If you get a positive response, find out what sort of questions they want to ask and you can begin compiling some responses.
When you provide your answers or quote for the interviewer, make sure you remain neutral and unbiased. Avoid talking about your company or brand (unless it’s directly relevant to the post) and concentrate on providing genuinely interesting or useful insight. No-one wants to read your opinion on how wonderful your company is, but they may be interested in what you have to say on a relevant topic.

Run Competitions

Competitions are a proven technique for increasing social engagement and followers, but they can also be good for generating quality links. With the right promotion and a great incentive to enter, competitions are often linked from other sites across the web. Gaz Copeland  put together a great post on the topic here.

Refresh Old Content

Sometimes, great content on the web that is still read and ranks well is actually several years old and may even be mildly out of date in terms of content. Equally, sometimes great content becomes so out of date that it is no longer read or listed in rankings and no-one rewrites it.
If you can find content like this that is relevant to your industry it provides you with a fantastic opportunity to recreate the content, pitch your idea to the original site and supply them with a link to your site.
The best way to find this sort of content is to search Google for terms related to your business and add words like “definitive guide”, “complete guide” or “whitepaper”. Browse through the results and look for old or out-of-date content. Then think about how you could improve it.
When you’ve got a target site and idea, contact the site owner with your proposition. If the original page has a lot of backlinks and/or good search engine ranking, you could really win big with a high-quality link.

Embeddable Resources = Link Bait

Spending the time and/or money into creating a quality, shareable resource can be a worthwhile investment. However, by adding embed code at the bottom you can transform a quality resource from interesting and potentially shareable to solid gold* link bait.
The perfect example of a site doing this well is YouTube. With embed codes on every single video and people all over the world embedding videos on their own sites daily, their link profile will never stop growing.
There are many different types of resource which can be embedded, including:
  • Infographics
  • Videos
  • Photos
  • Widgets
Remember to include a call-to-action with your embed code as well as social share buttons to encourage engagement. For more information, see this great guide to creating viral linkbait and infographics from Distilled.

Advanced SEO

This article deals with the finer points of search engine optimization (SEO) and how you can use advanced techniques to improve your rank. If you are new to SEO, check out our SEO Basics article first.
Rule 1: Improving your relevance = improving your rank.
There are many, many factors that make up a search engine's ranking algorithm and there is no one person that can give you an exact formula. In fact, the formula may change based on your industry or keywords. Most SEO experts will agree, however, there are some known factors that have influence beyond the basic level of search engine optimization.
If you are trying to achieve rank for a keyword that is low in competitiveness, you may not need to consider these advanced SEO factors. But, in some circumstances every little boost is important.
Site Structure:
Pages that are more than 2-3 levels deep within a website tend to achieve rank less often than pages at root level.
www.mysite.com/keyword.html versus www.mysite.com/content/pages/category/keyword.html
Site maps (linked from the home page) are used by search engine robots to easily find pages within your site.
Search engine robots follow text links much easier than image or script links so don't make it harder.
URL's that contain keywords are a ranking factor for some engines. Even if your domain name doesn't contain your keyword; you can still insert it by using a page naming methodology like this:
www.mysite.com/keyword.html instead of www.mysite.com/contentID4.html
Search engine robots:
Search engine robots will note the date your content changes and what has changed since their last visit. Sites that update content more frequently will get indexed more frequently.
Search engine robots typically do not index your entire site in one visit... it is not known how many pages or how long each visit will be but it is beneficial to make sure your content is as accessible as possible... shorten your code, use consistent linking and a site map. Pages that are too deep may never get indexed unless they have a large link popularity.
Page Structure:
Validate HTML! Search engine robots can skip part or ALL of your page if they encounter unrecognized or garbled coding.
Keep it at the top. Structure your pages so that the main content is NOT hundreds of lines down the file. Robots "read" your file from top to bottom so using CSS or table tricks can help you keep content higher. Use external files for javascript and style sheets so that your code stays shorter.
Advanced SEO techniques encompass many "little" elements but when they add up, it could make the difference you need to boost your search engine positioning. If in doubt, see rule number 1 (above).

Who Benefits from SEO?

A big question for business owners is whether or not to invest in SEO. SEO may improve performance, but some sites require much more work than others to gain even marginal results. In these cases, using paid search marketing until you are ready for a re-design makes more sense.
The most common mistake site owners make is not seeking professional SEO advice BEFORE the design process. Web designers are not usually SEO experts. Their job involves designing the site... often they overlook the technical aspects of making the site search engine friendly. Because many site owners assume these aspects are part of the design, they don't seek marketing advice until after the site is completed. It is hard to tell someone that no matter what they do their beautiful site will never achieve high rankings.
Each situation is different depending on budget and quality of the site construction. Here is a list of common problems and the recommended solutions.
PROBLEM: My site has no rankings and it was designed more than 3 years ago.
If the site owner has the budget, we would recommend a redesign along with SEO. Why? Because any site that is over 3 years old can probably benefit from newer technology and up-to-date SEO techniques. There is no substitute for starting from the ground up - improving the usability and SEO at the same time. If the budget is tight, redesign would depend on whether or not the existing site has problems that are preventing it from being indexed in search engines (using frames, flash, etc.). Sometimes these problems can be corrected and SEO alone is enough to get decent rankings.
PROBLEM: My site has no rankings and I just spent a bundle on re-design.
It depends on the site, however, often I would try to salvage this site and perform SEO without a redesign. Unless the problems are huge, improving the optimization and content may do the trick.
PROBLEM: My site needs a redesign... when should I think about SEO?
Absolutely think about SEO BEFORE YOU EVEN PLAN A RE-DESIGN. SEO starts in the planning stage, choosing the right keywords and structuring the site content. Everything from planning to final build-out play a role in how highly optimized your site will be.
PROBLEM: My site needs SEO... Can I do it myself?
If you have a small budget and you are thinking of doing SEO yourself, be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time learning before you act - but... you should do it. Properly executed, SEO can improve your site for human visitors as well as search engines. If you do have the budget, consider hiring a professional. For the cost involved, it makes sense to save the time and effort required.

Website check - check your sites´ SEO strength.

Why regularly checking your position is so important

Checking your site's ranking is of uttermost importance to see how your website ranks at this point of time and to understand which steps are necessary to boost your SEO rankings. This little check gives a raw overview over your current website's strength. It returns important values like google pagerank, google indexed pages, google backlinks, yahoo backlinks as well as some other search engine results. Additionally it returns info about some major social networks, and how the website is rated there.

Website SEO strength

The strength is an indicator, how well your site has been optimized from the view of content, as more backlinks and more visitors mean, the page's contents are interesting for a major audience. If your results are low, we can be of help, as we offer white-hat SEO including one-way link building, article and press release writing as well as on-page optimization. Just check our SEO section »

Website validity

It's also important, if your website renders correctly, thus having clean and correct (X)HTML code and CSS. It is said, that pages that do not comply to these standards are ranked worse than sites with clean code.

If that's just a fairytale or not, it is proven that clean code makes it easier for search engines to distinguish code from content, thus reducing the possibilites for errors. If your page does not comply to webdesign standards, you should think of a redesign which we also offer. Check out our webdesign services on this page.
This SEO Analyzer Tool is to help you analyze and measure the ranking potential of your web site.

SEO Analyzer Tool Features:

  • Quality thumbnail of web page
  • Site Diagnostics - detailed information for homepage (HTML Size, Title, Description, Keywords, ...)

Free? What's the catch?

There's no catch. The site is a free project and not a commercial undertaking. The worst you're ever going to see is a few ads or a donate button.

About SEO

Search Engine Optimization, SEO, is the science of crafting your website in a way that can help you ‘naturally’ achieve top positions in the search engine results pages (SERPs). As approximately 80% of web users click though on the natural results listings rather than the paid-for results, it really pays to know something about SEO technique; particularly if you have a bottom line relying solely on web traffic.

What constitutes SEO?

Rather than being the mysterious art many SEO practitioners make it out to be, SEO could be more accurately described as a technical, highly measurable toolkit of interlocking web variables. So, from an SEO perspective, even the smallest improvements made to one function of your site can have an incredible impact on your ROI. These variables can be grouped together under the following categories:
  • Keywords
  • On-page optimization
  • Linkbuilding
  • Measurement

SEO categories explained

Each of these categories involves a plethora of inextricably linked features. For example, when talking about keywords, it’s much more than simply picking the word ‘travel’ if you have a travel site, there is a good deal of research that needs to be done first in order to target the most appropriate keywords for your business. You will need to assess your products or services, analyze what the competition are up to, find out where in the consumer purchasing decision you would be most effectively positioned and so on. Getting that right provides a great basis for success before fully optimizing for your targeted search terms, but you need to make sure web users can actually see you - which means you need to make sure the search engine spiders can see you. This means that ‘build’elements like source code, titles, headings, meta data and such like need to fall in line with the search engine’s guidelines denoting crawlability. For example, spiders eat up text – they can’t see images or flash and struggle with framed sites. Your website could be the most stunning interactive piece of creativity on the web but if the spiders cannot find you, no amount of awards will make up for the impact this could have on your business development.

Linkbuilding for visibility

Linkbuilding is also fundamental to increasing your visibility. Spiders navigate the web by link-surfing. They jump from one site to another via the network of cyberspace links, so it stands to reason that the more links that point to your site, the more the spiders will crawl you and, thus, the more relevant they will consider you to be. The ‘link-juice’ provided by, ideally, lots of high quality, inbound links will add strength and visibility to your site. The key is creating unique and interesting content that makes people want to link to you, that holds web users’ interest when they visit you and that keeps them coming back for more. Getting all of the above right is a self-fulfilling circle of testing, measuring and tweaking but the results can be seriously profitable.

SEO business sense

Of all the tools in the marketing mix, SEO really is one of the most cost-efficient. The effects of a well optimized website are two-fold. Primarily, it will give your site a chance to reach the top spots in the search engine results. We already know that around 42% of all web users click through on the number one position result. After that, approximately 13% enter on position two with subsequent positions achieving decreasing traffic numbers, and only 2% make it to the second results page; though 2% of hundreds of millions of searches is still not bad. The point here is that around three quarters of all online transactions start with the search engines so conversions from a top position are fruitful. The fact that you can see fluctuations in your return on investment very clearly with SEO means that you can fine-tune your site with informed ‘test-and-learn’ knowledge. If certain keywords are outperforming others, it is clear what you need to optimize for and so forth.
What’s more, in addition to the directly measurable results generated by SEO, the effect on your brand can also be very positive. Achieving a top position not only drives traffic but increases awareness and lends strength to your brand by ranking you as superior to competitors in your field. With worldwide internet user growth having increased by nearly 350% since the turn of the millennium (Nielsen Online, March ‘09) and a global recession to boot, the days of the big above-the-line advertising campaign appear to be numbered; search is where the real leg-work is at.

Google Loves Unique Content

What Google does like is great unique content. We have seen the rise in importance of content creation and curation as a marketing tool over the last few years. People use the web to find information, that is why Google is putting such a high value on unique content. Creating great contagious content that begs to be shared such as videos, blog posts and ebooks also has a big side benefit.  That benefit is that people will link to your website or blog and hence Google gives you big ticks in its search engine calculations the more often back-links are created to your blog and website from other websites.
This is is where the tactic of “offsite optimisation” starts to make its importance and presence felt and should be included in your SEO strategy. This is the final stage of getting Google to like you. (Read about the first stage here)

Off-page Optimization

SEO experts generally agree that off-page link building techniques can contribute around 80% of the effectiveness in any SEO campaign. Off-page optimization or building links, is by far the most important activity for assisting us in getting our website well ranked in search engines. And the key driving force in this, is backlinks.

The Importance of “Back Links

A link, or back-link, is the link that you use to be brought to another page. Backlinks are incredibly important because they are basically like “votes” for your page that tell search engines that other webpages like and utilise your page for information. The more websites that you have linked or “voting” for your webpage, the higher your ranking will be. Though, not all votes are weighted the same, as links from the homepage of major websites, like the Australian Government australia.gov.au, amazon.com or facebook.com, are going to be worth a lot more than a lesser known website.
So here are 6 tips for easy link building:

Tip 1:  Competitor analysis

Assuming you won’t be getting many links from those major sites, there still are easy link building tactics available to you. Begin your link building campaign with a competitor analysis. Basically, you want to repeat what your best competitors are doing, as one of the key link building principles is to match and exceed your competitors. Meaning, if you can go through and match all the links they have, or at least a majority of them, and find a couple of other ways to get additional links that they don’t have, you will be able to easily surpass them in searching ranking results.

Tip 2: Content, content and content

As always, the best way to encourage people to link to your website, is by consistently providing new, compelling and useful content. Content, content and content, to steal a well known phrase.
Creating compelling, relevant and useful content; such as writing about your products, industry, general current market information with keyword oriented useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factor discussed here. After the Google Penguin update, regularly posted quality content is the recommended method to getting more traffic to your website. Ideally you should post at least 2 new articles per week, more being better, as Google will favour websites with frequently updated material that contains unique and relevant content. And if your website offers good content, other websites will naturally want to link to you as well.
When you are posting articles, don’t forget to apply the same principles of Title tag and Meta Description to your articles, and don’t forget to include your desired keywords or phrases.
